Your Patio Should Not Go Dark at 8 PM
Arlington backyards get real use — cookouts, kids, quiet evenings with a glass of something. But most patios and decks have one harsh floodlight or nothing at all. One click and you are either blinded or in the dark. There is no in-between.
Deck and patio lighting creates the in-between. Soft light on the steps so nobody trips. A warm glow under the rail cap so you can see faces around the table. Down-lights from the pergola that feel like candlelight, only reliable. Your outdoor space becomes a room — one you actually use after dark.
What We Install
Step and stair lights. Small recessed fixtures in risers or mounted on the side of steps. This is safety first — stairs are the number-one trip spot after dark.
Rail and post-cap lights. Lights under the rail or in post caps throw a soft wash across the deck floor. Beautiful and practical.
Pergola and structure down-lights. Fixtures mounted up high aim down, creating pools of warm light over seating and dining areas — like moonlight, only warmer.
Patio edge and wall lights. Low fixtures along patio edges and seat walls define the space and keep feet on the patio, not in the planting bed.
Grill and outdoor kitchen lighting. Task lighting where you cook — bright enough to see the steaks, warm enough to keep the mood. See our outdoor kitchen lighting page.
Built Into the Structure, Not Bolted On
The best deck lighting disappears into the build. We work with your deck's structure — recessing fixtures into risers, hiding wire inside posts and under rails, matching fixture finishes to your hardware. On new deck builds, we coordinate with your contractor so wiring goes in before the boards go down. On existing decks, we fish wire cleanly with minimal visible hardware.
Zones for Every Mood
Your patio does not need every light on every night. We wire deck and patio lighting on its own zone with smart controls — full brightness for the cookout, low and warm for a quiet evening, steps-only when you just need to get to the grill. One tap on your phone, or a schedule that handles it automatically.
Safety That Looks Good
Every year, people get hurt on dark stairs and unlit patio edges. Step lights and edge lighting fix the danger spots while making the space more beautiful — safety and style in the same fixture. If you have older family members or kids running around, this is the highest-value lighting you can add.

Lighting for How You Actually Use the Space
Tell us how you use your patio and we will tell you where the lights go. The grill master needs task light at the cooking station. The dinner-party host needs dimmable warmth over the table. The parents need step lights and edge definition so kids navigate safely. The quiet-evening couple needs one soft zone and nothing more. Most patios serve two or three of these roles — which is exactly why zones matter.
We design around your real evenings, not a showroom fantasy. If the patio is mostly a pass-through to the yard, it gets guidance lighting. If it is the destination, it gets the full layered treatment. The consultation is where we learn which one you have.
Working Around What Is Already There
Most of our deck and patio projects retrofit into existing spaces — and that is fine. We have added lighting to twenty-year-old decks, new paver patios, and everything between. Wire fishes through deck framing, tucks under rails, and hides behind posts. On patios, wire buries along edges and under cap stones. The finished work looks original, not added-on.
For new construction, earlier is better. If your contractor is still framing, we coordinate fixture placement and wire runs before the decking goes down — cleaner, faster, and less expensive. Just introduce us to your builder and we handle the rest.
How It Works: Our Process
Step 1 — Consultation. We visit at a time you can show us how you use the space — where you sit, where you cook, where the kids run — and map the structure.
Step 2 — Design and proposal. Fixture plan for steps, rails, seating areas, and cooking zones, with zone layout and itemized pricing.
Step 3 — Installation. One to two days: fixtures recessed or mounted, wire hidden in the structure, connected to its own zone with dimming.
Step 4 — Night aiming. We return after dark to set light levels for each zone and fine-tune aim. You test the scenes with us — dinner mode, party mode, quiet mode.
