Two Kinds of Light, One Backyard Kitchen

An outdoor kitchen needs two things from light, and they are opposites. At the grill, you need task light — bright, clear, true-color light so you can tell medium-rare from well-done. At the table, you need mood light — warm, dim, flattering, the kind that makes dinner stretch to midnight.

We design both into the same space, on separate zones, so one tap gives you cooking light and another gives you dining light.

What We Light

The grill station. Dedicated task lighting over the grill — aimed to light the cooking surface without shining in the cook's eyes. This is the light that ends the phone-flashlight era.

Counters and prep areas. Under-cabinet style lighting under bar tops and counter overhangs. You can actually see what you are chopping.

The dining area. Down-lights from a pergola or trees overhead (moonlighting is perfect here), or string-light-style warmth from properly rated fixtures. Dimmer-ready for the long evening.

Paths to and from the kitchen.Path lights and step lights so the trip from the back door to the grill — hands full — is safe.

The surrounding landscape. The kitchen sits in a yard. Bed lighting and tree lights around it make the whole space feel finished, not just the cooking zone.

True Color for Cooking

Cheap outdoor lights lie about color — everything looks gray-green, and you cannot judge doneness. We use high-CRI (color-accurate) LED fixtures at grill and prep stations, in warm white. Your steaks look like steaks, your vegetables look fresh, and plating actually looks appetizing.

Separate Zones, One App

Cooking zone, dining zone, landscape zone — each on its own control through our smart lighting system. Presets handle the transitions: "grilling" (task lights up, dining low), "dinner" (task off, dining warm and dim), "party" (everything on). Or let the schedule run it automatically.

Weather-Ready Fixtures

Outdoor kitchens live in grease, smoke, and weather. We specify sealed, easy-clean fixtures rated for the environment — wipe-down faces, corrosion-resistant housings, and placement that keeps direct cooking splatter off the lens.

The Two Lighting Jobs: Task and Mood

An outdoor kitchen asks light to do two opposite jobs, and the design has to serve both. Task lighting at the grill and prep counters must be bright, clear, and color-accurate — you need to judge doneness, read recipes, and handle knives safely. Mood lighting at the dining table must be warm, dim, and flattering — the kind of light that stretches dinner past midnight. One zone cannot do both, which is why outdoor kitchens get separate zones with separate controls.

We map the kitchen into task areas and living areas during the design. Grill, prep counters, and serving stations get dedicated task fixtures. Dining, lounging, and surrounding landscape get ambient treatment. Then scenes tie them together: 'Cooking' brings task zones up; 'Dining' drops them and warms the table; 'Party' lights everything for the crowd.

Placement That Survives Real Cooking

Outdoor kitchens are hostile environments for light fixtures: radiant heat from the grill, grease in the air, smoke, weather, and the occasional flare-up. Placement is everything. Task fixtures mount out of the direct heat zone — under eaves, on nearby posts, or on dedicated arms — aimed at the cooking surface from a safe distance. We never mount a fixture where a flare-up can reach it.

Fixture selection matters too. Sealed housings with wipe-clean lenses shrug off grease film. Corrosion-resistant materials handle the smoke and weather. And every task fixture is positioned for relamping and cleaning without disassembling the kitchen. A fixture you cannot service is a fixture that will fail dirty — we place for the long term.

Power and Control Planning

Outdoor kitchens often grow — today a grill, tomorrow a pizza oven, next year a full bar. We plan power and zones for the kitchen you might have, not just the one you have now. Spare transformer capacity, extra wire runs to logical expansion points, and a control system with room for more zones. Growing the kitchen's lighting later should mean adding fixtures, not rewiring.

Controls deserve special thought in a kitchen. You want them reachable but not in the splash zone — a weatherproof keypad near the dining area, plus the phone app for everything else. Presets handle the transitions so the cook is not fumbling with an app mid-flare-up: one tap for cooking light, one for dinner, one for cleanup.

How It Works: Our Process

Step 1 — Kitchen walk-through. We map your cooking and dining areas — grill, prep, serving, seating — and learn how you actually cook and entertain.

Step 2 — Zoned design. Task zones for cooking areas, ambient zones for dining and landscape, with scenes programmed for cooking, dining, and party modes.

Step 3 — Installation. Heat-safe fixture placement, sealed easy-clean housings, wire hidden in the structure, connected to dedicated kitchen zones.

Step 4 — Night setup. We return after dark to set task brightness, tune dining ambiance, and program your scenes with you — then cook something to test it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you light my existing grill area?

Yes. Most grill stations just need one or two well-aimed task fixtures — often mounted under an eave, on a post, or in a nearby tree. It is a quick, high-impact upgrade.

What color light is best for cooking?

Warm white with high color accuracy (high CRI). It renders food colors truly — you can judge doneness — while still feeling warm and inviting, not clinical.

Will the lights get damaged by grill heat and grease?

Not if placed correctly. We mount task fixtures out of the direct heat and splatter zone and use sealed, wipe-clean fixtures rated for outdoor kitchen environments.

Can the dining lights dim?

Yes — dimming is standard on our dining and ambient zones. Bright for setup and cleanup, low and warm for the actual dinner.
